Lucky Number You – Disassociator (2022)

There are times when we all start to doubt authority figures in our lives, but this can often be a slippery slope. Lucky Number You journeys into these times with their single ‘Disassociator’ which is told from the perspective of someone losing faith in systems, mentors and themselves. As they slip into distrust of all authority figures, they try to temper this with the fall down, the conspiracy theory and misinformation rabbit hole.

A single that is extremely relevant in our current times, it brings a hint of the past with it through the 80s pop-rock tones. Sprinkling piano notes over relentless drums and melodic guitars, the band has you considering faith in the world and inspiration. As a debut single, this track is really setting the bar high and has you excited to see if they can maintain the momentum.

The beats that open ‘Disassociator’ have your head bopping to their rhythm while the electronic tones bring a touch of the past. There is a great movement to the music that sweeps through you with the guitars. The strumming that takes over bounces wonderfully off the relentless drums. It is a ridiculously engaging melody that you can’t help but move around to. The catchiness continues throughout the single while higher tones wash over the high levels and the swirl of new and old inundates your senses. The feeling of the music overwhelming your senses is well handled but also perfectly captures the feeling of the moment in the lyrics.

While you are getting hooked to the movement of the melody, the vocals pull you into questioning authority figures and edging along the line of conspiracy theory. The narrative perspective is masterful as it plucks thoughts out of the narrators head and lays them out for you to peruse. You are also treated to the really reasonable reasons why the narrator is spiralling as they are. The chorus calls for something that they can believe in and adds to the catchiness of the music. You may just find yourself singing out with the band on the chorus as you feel the tender glitter of something that you can hold onto and put your faith in.

Lucky Number You sets the bar with the merger of old and new while spiralling into distrust in their debut single ‘Disassociator’. The melody is extremely catchy and has you bopping away to it without any trouble. The vocals use a great narrative that really showcases the thoughts of the track while giving you the glimmer of something to put your faith into.
