Micayla Shafran – Fallen (2026)
With a bright smile and shining eyes, singer-songwriter, figure-skater and environmental advocate Micayla Shafran can draw you in with a single curl of her mouth; however, she has far more going for her than surface beauty. Hailing from New York, Shafran embraced a zealous interest in music, performance and arts at a young age. At 12 years, she performed for the first time, singing the USA national anthem at a Renegades baseball game. Skip ahead a little, and Shafran graduated from the University of Miami, majoring in Ecosystem Science & Policy and Theatre Arts – not necessarily two fields that coincide. While continuing to work in the environmental field after university, Shafran caressed that passion for the arts and began working with producer Burt White, honing her songwriting and launching a solo project; it is this solo journey that we look at today.
Alright, brief history over, now we can get to the meat of this review: Micayla Shafran’s ‘Fallen’. Recorded and produced at Criteria Recording Studios with White, ‘Fallen’ follows her debut single, ‘Eurydice (Be My Light)’. Soft, soothing, and ethereal, ‘Fallen’ is a mellifluous concoction of piano, drums and strings. The Enya influence is greatly evident in Shafran’s angelic vocals – both serene and kind of creepy. Yet, while the haunting soundscape is enigmatic, like wandering through a sonic fog, her dulcet voice is almost honey-soaked, hopeful and earnest.
Melodically, ‘Fallen’ is a gentle tune to take you across a wistful soundscape; however, it is far more than a shimmering tune. Shafran explains:
“I wrote this song as a way to cope with my mom going to prison. On November 6, 2025, she was arrested, and she never came home. I knew that she had made mistakes, but she is my mother, and I love her… This song was written during one of the hardest times of my life. ‘Fallen’ is an anthem for those that have sacrificed their own peace and happiness to stay strong for their loved one when they needed them most… I really hope that ‘Fallen’ finds its way to those that need it. If you have gone through hell for someone you love and stayed strong for them, even when it hurt you, then ‘Fallen’ is for you.”
