Nils Lassen – Under Your Spell (2026)
With a career spanning both film and music, from stage plays to children’s music and film score composition, Danish composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nils Lassen has developed a diverse portfolio. While we initially discovered Lassen via the pop duo BlackieBlueBird, his solo project caught our eye in 2024 with ‘Close Those Ocean Eyes’. Today, he continues to turn our heads with his most recent single, ‘Under Your Spell’.
So, is this a good head-turning or a bad head-turning? Given we enjoyed the refreshing but retro tone of Lassen’s contemporary ‘Close Those Ocean Eyes’, it’ll probably be a good one. However, since 2024, he has released two albums, Fingerprints and Hvem er jeg?, so perhaps an evolution in his sound might have altered the pleasantness of his music (at least for us). Instead of retaining the brash hard rock sound of Hvem er jeg?, ‘Under Your Spell’ lifts the veil slightly with an indie-rock vibe. So far, so good.
Produced by Nils Lassen, ‘Under Your Spell’ is an obscure mish-mash of Tomas Ortved’s drums, Anders Wallin’s bass, and Kitty Drue’s guitars. Soaring and light, but also a tentative sonic mist, the composition ebbs and flows, rocks too and fro, and takes you on a journey that appears exciting but demands cautiousness. Lassen explains:
“The song moves through a suspended, uncertain space where love reveals its strange and transformative force – a meditation on faith, desire and the fragile hope that something still waits ahead… It lingers in the blurred space between surrender and self-possession, spellbound and fully awake, held between the void and the promise of what may still come.”
Melodically, ‘Under Your Spell’ is an engaging wash of music, but the vocals add an extra something, embracing the cinematic expanse with steady emotions. The first single from Lassen’s upcoming album, Rain Steam Speed, ‘Under Your Spell’ can easily place you under a spell, and I’m eager to discover what else we can expect on the upcoming release. All in all, this is a great head turn!
