OpCritical – Doing Fine (2026)
The names behind the music aren’t important when it comes to US-based group OpCritical; what matters is the message. Formed in 2026 as a brutally honest response to the current state of society, OpCritical’s music and lyrics are ”…a mirror of the monster before us… which is and will destroy everything in its wake unless there is a powerful citizen operation to push back.” With songs like ‘Not My America’, the group explored the lack of civility and discord in America, while ‘USA’ called on people to unite and reclaim democracy. When it comes to the most recent release, ‘Doing Fine’, OpCritical explains:
“’Doing Fine’ presents an irreverent comment on societal conformity. In today’s society, especially with constant social media pressuring people to conform, it is sometimes difficult to walk one’s own path. Institutional pressure might come from a rigid home environment, an intolerant religious organisation at school, or even a prison that punishes freedom of thought or expression. So, in ‘Doing Fine’, we unapologetically announce that we did not succumb to all these pressures, yet we are doing fine. We hope this will inspire others to embrace their own uniqueness.”
Clinging to the ferocity of old-school grunge and punk, ‘Doing Fine’ is a four-minute (or just under four-minute) rush of intense music. Almost savage in nature, there is a frenzied urgency embedded in this melody; a scorching guitar travelling across the song, while crashing drums add an edgy kick to the tune. The thing is, while ‘Doing Fine’ is a brutal thrash of music, with pounding vocals walking along, the track is harmonic and rhythmic in its brash presentation.
While the single is a bit “in your face” – a swot between the eyes – it doesn’t really hold such ferocity in its lyricism. Declaring they don’t think the way the overarching authoritarian *insert a rather rude word here* do, OpCritical bring a heart-warming comfort and assurance that you aren’t alone in this *insert another rude word here* and that standing tall will make a difference.
In addition to the single, OpCritical released an official music video for ‘Doing Fine’. The video can be viewed below and/or on their YouTube channel.
