PREMIERE: Where We Sleep – Outside (2026)
Dark, hypnotic, immersive, and cinematic, Where We Sleep is just the right measure of being lost in a haze of murky music dropped in the light of self-discovery and empowerment. A shared place of solace, route to catharsis and bubble of acceptance, Where We Sleep’s melodies draw together aspects of post-punk, indie, electronica, grunge, and the tap of Joni Mitchell with Kate Bush vulnerability. We began our journey with singer-songwriter Beth Rettig (the brains behind Where We Sleep) on ‘Headlong’; we continue with her single, ‘Outside’.
Following her 2025 single, ‘Headlong’, ‘Outside’ is another taste of Rettig’s upcoming album, The Arsonist, set for release in June this year. Mixed and mastered by Guy Fixsen, the single is neither smooth and mellifluous nor brash and abrupt. A wave of music, the melody is led by a bold bass setting the pace, giving it an anchoring grunge that keeps you on the correct path. From both sides, interspersed synth hits slip across, adding a haunting vibe to the track; however, it is Rettig’s crashing, scorching, and soaring guitars that lead the musical stride in a flowing manner, while also enhancing the gritty distortion.
Melodically, ‘Outside’ is a song that pushes and pulls with wavering sensibilities, presenting a question of “do I fit here” or “should I walk there” – all in a hazy, kaleidoscopic sound. Known for her honest, raw, emotional lyrics, ‘Outside’ is as profound and weighty as the melody. With lines like, “Do you feel better now / what did you win / do you feel worthy now / did you prove something”, the track is about self-discovery and individual understanding, as it is about “coming together through shared experiences.”
‘Outside’ will be available to stream on May 15, 2026.
In addition to the single, Where We Sleep released an official music video for ‘Outside’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
