Revue – The Wolf (2020)

There are certain stories that most girls are told growing up with damsels in distress and good girls staying on the path or meeting a sticky end. These stories generally have no power for female characters and this is something that Revue are considering with their single ‘The Wolf’. Through the ominous tones and earthy folk-blues notes, they offer a different story letting little girls know that they don’t have to be afraid of the wolf because they are the wolf.

This empowering story comes from duo Emma Loudon (vocals) and Martin Price (multi-instrumentalist). Together, they combine modern indie sounds with folk and blues. This single is the title track off their upcoming EP set for release in early 2021.

‘The Wolf’ draws you in with a humming vocal line over a funky blues melody. The melody has a great rock tone woven into the sliding blues tones. There is an earthy feeling to the melody that makes you think about forests. The slides of the melody force your shoulders to move to them while the notes put a smile on your face. There is a slight darkness to the melody, but this is infused with an empowering feeling that soars through your brain with the guitar riffs.

The earthy blues feeling of the melody is compounded by Loudon’s vocals. Her smoky vocals creep into your brain to draw you into the empowering lyrics of the track. There is a wonderful storytelling quality to the lyrics that offer you a new story full of female empowerment and strength. The lyrics set a scene of the stories young girls are told, but this is turned into strength on the chorus as Loudon tells you what the truth is.

Revue is empowering young girls and letting them know that they don’t have to be afraid because they are ‘The Wolf’. The bluesy melody has an ominous darkness in the lower levels as it slides against your skin. The vocals are smoky and powerful as they tell the tale of being the wolf and fill you with strength.
