Rumour Den – Chapter & Verse (2026)
Music can be a burning flame in one’s soul – zealous, earnest and ferocious; then again, it can be a dark hand pulling you into a sonic abyss brimming with excitement, passion and the heart-pumping feeling that you know is going to take over, but you can’t wait. Either way, music is something that cannot be ignored, escaped or refused… well, sort of. When it comes to Rumour Den, the musical project of singer-songwriters AJ Gilmore and Steve Simms, the embers burn bright, the alluring imp winks, and a siren sings in the distance. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Chapter & Verse’.
Following the well-received single, ‘All In This Together’, ‘Chapter & Verse’ retains an alternative rock sound, but the lads seemingly step from the dark into (or at least towards) a lighter side of the cave. Produced by Frankie McClay, Simms bass guitar takes bold steps along with Eamon “Lenny” Lenehan’s drum pulsating in the background, simultaneously steady and crashing. Following the ebb and flow of the melody, the instruments sweep along with McClay’s synths shimmering at its underbelly. Simms’ lead guitar soars and swoops, but it is Gilmore’s vocals that up the ante.
Melodically, ‘Chapter & Verse’ is a single to have you strutting about with an air guitar, smashing invisible drums, shouting into a hairbrush – basically, you’re a rock star losing yourself in the music. The instruments might be powerful, but, in true Rumour Den fashion, weightiness lies in the lyrics. Rumour Den explain:
“Lyrically, the song explores the uncomfortable gap between the life we imagine for ourselves and the one we actually live. Beginning with an unfinished book, it widens into abandoned ambitions, lost confidence and failed relationships, gradually asking how long we can blame circumstance before confronting our own part in where we ended up.”
Leaning into the void between imagination and reality, Rumour Den’s ‘Chapter & Verse’ is universal and timeless. Highly recommended!!
