Sautereau – What If (2022)

Throughout life, we have small moments that stick out in our memory long after the experience has passed. Sautereau is paying tribute to these memorable moments and entwining them in the feeling of hitting it off with someone new. Packed with intriguing emotions and the urge to feel the emotions more, the single has you drifting through your own memories of good times.

After starting its life as an acoustic guitar groove, the single has grown into beats that you can easily get lost in. While Sautereau only started her musical career in 2019 under the moniker Cee, her journey in music began at the age of 8 when she started playing the guitar. Her undeniable passion for music flowed from this moment and saw her find success as both Cee and under this new musical project.

The almost lo-fi strum of an acoustic guitar in the opening of ‘What If’ gets your attention before a more moving strum takes over. There is a wonderfully gentle movement to the melody created by the acoustic guitar groove. The beats beneath this line have a light feeling that enhances the acoustics while still getting you tapping along. You can easily imagine Sautereau playing this single in a room with just her guitar. While the music has a generally stripped-back feeling, there is an emotive depth resting in it. The creation of this depth is masterful as it subtly flows into your sense and gets you hopelessly addicted to the movement.

Against the acoustic tones of the melody, Sautereau’s vocals are tender and delicate. The light touch of her voice adds bright feelings to the lyrics as she drops you into good times with someone in a town you love. While the lyrics touch on good memories and relationships, there is an ode to New York woven into it. The layered meaning of the lyrics is wonderful as it allows each listener to determine what the song is really about. As you float through the lyrics, the vocal performance puts a small smile on your lips while lifting any negativity from your chest.

Sautereau has you smiling as you fall into memories of good times spent in a place you love with someone you care about in ‘What If’. The acoustic guitar-driven melody is gentle as it draws you into the initial emotions of the track. Her vocals are equally tender as they lift negativity off your chest and replace it with happy memories.
