Track of the Day: Shawn Brown – What A Way To Go (2026)
A few years ago, 2021 to be precise, we came across a talented musician who offered not only toe-tapping music but also diversity, often blurring the lines between several genres including folk, indie, pop and rock. The musician was Shawn Brown. True, the EP that introduced us to Brown was his return to the scene after almost a ten-year hiatus; however, his honesty, passion and engaging manner hadn’t altered. Today, five years after Angel of Oakland, Brown passes across our virtual desk and onto our virtual pages with ‘What A Way To Go’.
The first single since his 2024 EP Into The Furious Light, ‘What A Way To Go’ lilts toward 1990s rock bands like Counting Crows and The Calling. Yet, his distinctive brand remains, particularly in his gruff vocals. Produced and recorded by Grecco Buratto, this blast from the past sound lingers with indie-pop vibes and a folk-rock tinge clipping at the edges. The combination of beating drums, a dynamic guitar, and soulful piano blend harmoniously with a smooth rhythm that seems to calm everything; a calm in the storm, so to say.
Interestingly, while ‘What A Way To Go’ hits you with gentle charm and soothing tenderness, its theme is actually more intricate. Delving into the complexities of relationships, the track unpacks those times when you understand the outside world isn’t necessarily working with you, but you want to keep the flame alive – resilience in conflict. Kind of like Romeo and Juliet without the suicide. Brown explains:
“I wanted this song to feel like the moment when two people realise the world might be falling apart around them, but they’re still holding onto each other anyway. Sometimes all that’s left to do is turn the guitars up, sing your heart out, and go down swinging.”
Sincere, heartfelt, and brimming with a fiery zeal made to keep your light burning, ‘What A Way To Go’ is a great soundtrack for lovers who won’t stop loving. Highly recommended!
