Solo Noi – You Can’t Make The River Go Back (2026)
Almost 45 years ago, musicians John Fitzsimons and Robert Smith had a chance meeting at a South London squat. Only beginning their musical journeys, the pair were songwriters living on a shoestring, just surviving by selling cars, rewiring houses, and decorating rooms. Since those early years, Fitzsimons and Smith have experienced great success with individual projects, but they continued collaborating as songwriters throughout the 80s and 90s, and into the 21st century. Skip ahead a few decades, and the veteran artists are no longer in South London, they no longer live on a shoestring, and have delved into various musical genres from blues to country. As the UK-based duo Solo Noi, Fitsimons and Roberts release their new single, ‘You Can’t Make The River Go Back’.
Following their 2025 EP, The Au Contraire EP, ‘You Can’t Make The River Go Back’ is a reggae-driven blend of jazz, rock and reggaeton. While this is the mould ‘You Can’t Make The River Go Back’ takes, the track was initially constructed with a blues/country-based approach derived from acts like Dr John and Little Feet. After receiving positive feedback for the original version, Fitzsimons brought his single to Smith, and Solo Noi adapted it to their “eclectic style and new direction.”
Mirroring the approach of French reggae artist Yaniss Odua, ‘You Can’t Make The River Go Back’ adds a gleam of pop to the single, but it remains primarily reggaeton in a combination of bold bass, soaring guitars, a smooth keyboard, and pace-setting drums beating in the background. Toe-tapping and chilled out, the rhythm is mellifluous with rich grooves; however, its lyricism makes it a little more weighty. A song about positivity after a harrowing loss, Solo Noi explain:
“‘You Can’t Make The River Go Back’ is not just a song but a poignant reflection of personal journey and resilience. Written in the aftermath of a significant loss in John’s life, the track encapsulates the healing power of music and the human spirit. The lyrics… offer a message of hope and perseverance, reminding listeners that moving forward is the only way to navigate life’s challenges.”
