Waterpistol – She Flies (2026)
Born of the remnants of various “put-to-bed creative projects”, Waterpistol sauntered… no, they probably stomped their way into the UK music world in 2023. With the release of their debut single, ‘Living in a dream’, and a debut show in April 2023, the Welsh six-piece bring the swagger of rock ‘n’ roll and the shine of 90s indie in a cheeky wink and mischievous smile. Influenced by the likes of The La’s, Shack, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Waterpistol crossed our ears earlier this year with ‘Felin’. Today, we carry on the walk through their discography with ‘She Flies’.
Self-recorded and produced, ‘She Flies’ is, as Waterpistol’s vocalist Harry Watton puts it, “as any good poet would say, it’s about a lot of things and nothing at all.” A drag back to the rock world of the 1970s, a lilt of The Doors meets Brian Jonestown Massacre wafts across the warm, rich bed of music. In an enigmatic sonic blanket, Emma Way’s bass carries a heavy bassline, while Efan Watkins drums keep the pace and layer the foundation. Aaron Tormey and Carwyn Whiteman slide across with silky, soaring guitar, and Harry Watton’s tambourine shivers in the distance. Along with his percussive contribution, Watton binds the comforting rock tune with charming vocals, holding you in a cosy hug.
In ‘Felin’, Waterpistol showcased their natural music skills and camaraderie with a raw, honest breath of sound. This is the case with ‘She Flies’. Simple, calm, and languid, every note from every instrument is pure instinct, like the band hardly needs to communicate, just connect.
‘Felin’ could have been placed in the film Hair as the one everyone sings along to while enjoying the moment. ‘She Flies’ belongs in the 1970 documentary, Woodstock, with its glowing hippie-era rock ‘n’ roll design. With the promise of a debut EP release, due in the summer of 2026, I am eager to hear more from this talented group.
