AM Shanley – SHY (2026)
Unwilling to compromise his integrity and musical authenticity, AM Shanley’s commitment to organic craftsmanship in an increasingly digital reality places him as an artist “unburdened by the fleeting demands of the 21st century, instead choosing to create music that resonates beyond temporal boundaries.” Since 2020, AM Shanley has sporadically released tracks from their debut ‘Redshifting’ to 2024’s ‘Gone, Gone (Gone)’, but today we’re looking at one of his most recent singles, ‘SHY’.
Taken from his 2025 debut album, American Vanilla, ‘SHY’ is three-and-a-half minutes of old-school alternative rock, but a post-punk vibe seemingly lingers across the guitar-driven track. Recorded and produced by Julie McLarnon, with mastering by Joel Harkin, the single has been described as “prioritising warmth and depth over convenience”; in my mind, this is entirely true. Damien McKeown’s drums beat in the melody like a backbone or anchor, while Ronnie McGreevy’s bass boldly steps along. Zach Trouton’s guitar slides across ‘SHY’ holding you in a close embrace, but it is AM Shanley’s vocals that get you smiling – like an old friend holding your hand while you giggle over a cup of tea and chocolate biscuits.
Melodically, I can imagine ‘SHY’ being the soundtrack to those cold nights with friends around a fire. It’s the song you have playing in the background on a long night’s drive. It’s perfect for intimate venues, yet also made for packed stadiums; simultaneously lifting the vibe and settling you down before high-spirited singles hit the stage. It is this duality of compelling musicality and subdued confidence that earns ‘SHY’ the reputation for classic skill, artistic vision, and impact through simplicity.
So, overall, what is my opinion of ‘SHY’ and AM Shanley? ‘SHY’ might slink to the wayside with blushing shyness, but it’s a song standing out with humility and sincerity. The Paris-based musician? I can’t wait to hear more AM Shanley and highly recommend his music to everyone!
