Throes NYC – The Wires Out (2026)
With their 2-track EP The Wires Out, Throes NYC has us moving between romance, tension and late-night nostalgia while toeing the line between connection and disconnection. Through these tracks, the band is pushing their usual dark and atmospheric sound to newer pop-tinged territory. Tackling intimacy in two different ways, the EP not only showcases the pushing of the band’s sonic boundaries but tempers nostalgia with the contemporary.
The duo behind the music have been moulding their sound since childhood, when they started making music together. Steeped in the gritty New York music scene, their moody and often experimental sound of today is an emotionally charged core surrounded by melodies that are intimate yet explosive. Although this is the basis of their music, each song brings something new and showcases something unexpected.
The first track of the EP is ‘Always, Baby ’, which draws you in with the soft vocals. There is an atmospheric shimmer to the melody that is met with a beat that marches slowly forward. The song has a soft tone throughout that flows into a romantic energy. The vocals take your hand and lead you into the sound like a partner grasping your hand as they lead you somewhere. The lyrics are loving and draw you into the depths of love that one person has for another. However, there is something darker that comes through toward the end of the track that slowly flips the tenderness into something that could be a lot more sinister.
‘Something Chemical’ is the second track and continues the darker side that crept into the latter parts of ‘Always, Baby’. The vocals have a completely different feeling to them as the softness that came before is dropped for a darker edge. The music matches this vocal switch as the swirls of the melody whirl around you like a heavy incense that hangs in the air. There is also a restless feeling to the music that has your pulse picking up without quite knowing what it is that is putting you on edge. Through all of this, the atmospheric sounds of the band shine through as you are dropped into a soundscape that is captivating.
While the EP is only 2 tracks long, Throes NYC have managed to pack a lot into it. Between the tracks, you are impressed by the swing they can create between softness and darkness, showcasing how they adapt their sound to the theme and emotions of the songs. The atmospheric stylings are present in both tracks, but they move from romantic to almost sinister from one song to the other, highlighting their musical prowess. Both songs are engaging, but listening to them together takes them to a completely different level, particularly as you feel the darker edges creep into the romance of ‘Always, Baby’ and turn into the almost anticipatory edge of ‘Something Chemical’.
