Track of the Day: Charcoal Greys – Blisters (2026)

What began as a crew of first cousins who happened to play music at family events grew into the foursome, Charcoal Greys. Considered one of the most “exciting indie-pop newcomers” on the scene, Emily O’Keeffe (vocals and acoustic guitar), Luke Boland (electric guitar), Zach O’Keeffe (bass and electric guitar) and Sam O’Keeffe (drums) bring punch, pizzazz and that good ol’ Irish charm to audiences’ ears. Over the past year, the lads and lady have built a following and honed their skills performing across Ireland; but it’s not the live gig that has our attention today. Come along as we saunter down the road to their debut single, ‘Blisters’.

Produced by Daniel DeBurca, Matt Bishop (mixing) and Romesh Dodangoda (mastering), ‘Blisters’ hits you between the eyes with a punch of old-school pop-punk. Breathing life into whispers of Paramore and Avril Lavigne, layers of crashing drums, a bold bass, and dynamic guitars sweep across the arrangement. Each element brings its own style, life, and colour to the tune; however, this musical dance is one of harmony and rhythm as well as individuality. So, in other words, you’ll find yourself jumping about, singing along, banging on imaginary drums, playing the air guitar, and basically being a rock star in your bedroom.

While the instruments weave together in a kaleidoscopic wash of pop-punk music, it is Emily O’Keeffe’s vocals that really catch your breath. By no means are the other cousins any less intriguing; it’s just that her voice leaps and twirls in the fore. Reminiscent of Hayley Williams, but with an obscure lilt that will quickly be distinctive to the band.

The melody is brilliant, but the whip of boisterous music is juxtaposed with melancholy lyrics to unpack the fragile, vulnerable, and tumultuous theme that makes it weighty. Charcoal Greys explain: “’Blisters’ explores the bittersweet emotional turmoil of a toxic relationship. When you know someone is not good for you, but you choose to stay anyway…”

Sincere and introspective, but with a burst of joy amidst those embers of a toxic relationship, Charcoal Greys are set for stardom. I hope their sophomore single is as good as the debut, ‘Blisters’.
