Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard – The Shadow Remains (2026)
Built around “sharp songwriting, acoustic guitars, and a love for atmosphere”, the Netherlands-based Joseph Turner is joined by his Dudes of Hazard on a musical journey… and they pick up listeners as passengers. If you aren’t aware of Joseph Turner & The Dudes of Hazard, or just haven’t had a chance to hit that play button, here’s a rather brief bio. The brainchild of Turner, the band is a collective of musicians marching across the realms of folk and old-school Americana. We hopped on the wagon in March with their track, ‘A New Moon’, and we kept on the path with ‘Travelin’ Heart’; today, we tag along with their most recent release, ‘The Shadow Remains’.
Produced by Turner, with Yannich Bovens (mixing) and Sam Moses (mastering), ‘The Shadow Remains’ is a dark, psychedelic flush of Americana. It’s almost as if you were sitting around a campfire about to share a conversation of significant depth. The pounding drums carry the melody, while guitars drive the tune. One acoustic and one electronic guitar weave about like two people dancing around each other. A breath of percussion lingers in the track, and it’s that that adds the campfire feeling.
Melodically, ‘The Shadow Remains’ is a whirl of intricate instrumentation; an arrangement that ebbs and flows, winds and wilts, slices and soothes. The melody is impressive, but it is the theme and lyricism that make ‘The Shadow Remains’ profound and weighty. Joseph Turner explains:
“’The song was written while looking back on a period marked by fear, anxiety, and eventually the fear of fear itself. Not a single moment or event, but years of carrying a sense of unease that never seemed too far away… For anyone who has ever felt like a prisoner in their own mind, ‘The Shadow Remains’ may feel familiar. But it is not about surrendering to those demons. If anything, it is the sound of having survived them and being able to look back at them from a distance.”
