Track of the Day: MACY – Pink Bandana

Describing her sound as “dreamy, nu-disco, sometimes dark-pop or even sometimes funky pop”, UK-based MACY is as unique in her poppiness as any pop artist could be. Since her debut single ‘Cinema’ in 2020, the Welsh beauty brings an exciting new sound to the UK pop scene. In fact, she captured the ears of BBC Radio in 2021 and performed alongside John Owen-Jones on the BBC Radio Christmas special show. Featured on Right Chord Music, Our Sound Music, Amazing Radio, Radio Cardiff and Reform Radio, MACY is reaching audiences across the globe. The latest addition to her well-received repertoire is ‘Pink Bandana’.

Following her EP Words4Luv, MACY adopts a bubble-gum pink contemporary pop style in ‘Pink Bandana’. Reminiscent of Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, but with a more prominent synth element, ‘Pink Bandana’ is a toe-tapping sensation. The incorporation of rock-inspired guitars brings edginess to the pop style showcasing MACY’s innovativeness as an artist. The light-heartedness of the melody instantly puts a smile on your face warming your heart. However, it is the way MACY contrasts the bright tune with more melancholic lyrical content that intrigues me.

A nostalgic song, ‘Pink Bandana’ touches on the relationships and the progression of these affairs. While the track may seem simplistically commercial pop, there is a deeper sentimentality in the lyrics as MACY takes on heartache. As the verses proceed, there is a movement from the “highchairs period” to “adolescent periods” and, ultimately, heartbreaking finality. Yet, there is a hopefulness in the song as the protagonists accept all they have are memories and photographs to rely on.

Sincere, sensitive and brutally honest, there is a genuineness in ‘Pink Bandana’ showcasing MACY’s artistry.
