Track of the Day: Stephen Tanner – Crazy Hearted Women (2023)

Described as having “beautiful songs that will both entertain and rip your heart out” by Rebecca Ryan of Tu-Kay and Ryan, Stephen Tanner can stir your soul and leave you gasping for more. Formed approximately one year ago, singer-songwriter and guitarist Stephen Tanner is joined by Gethin Evans (electric guitar), Simon Smith (bass) and Dan Parker (drums) on this musical journey. While Tanner does have material as a solo artist, it is this full-band ensemble that we are interested in today. Come with us as a delve into the lads’ single ‘Crazy Hearted Women’.

Recorded with producer Isi Clarke at Grange Farm Studio, ‘Crazy Hearted Women’ finds a line between country, indie-folk, and rock and roll. Tinges of Frank Turner meld with Mumford and Sons, but there is an originality to Tanner’s work that brings a completely distinctive sound. A hard-hitting, high-paced melody combines guitars and pounding drums in an unbelievably quick toe-tapping tune that gets you up and dancing immediately. I would say the guitars deftly carry you along the song with pounding drums bouncing you about, but no sentence I write can truthfully describe the frenzied feeling oozing from ‘Crazy Hearted Women’ (although I am trying my best).

Chaotic, brash, bold and utter madness in a sonic bubble, Stephen Tanner and his crew have your heart pounding with this insanity. Interestingly enough, while the track has a jovial feel to it, there is an intense intimacy in the profound lyricism. Tanner explains that ‘Crazy Hearted Woean’ touches on “…some failed love stories and the feelings associated with being trapped in relationships that are not right…the trail of destruction left behind when love doesn’t go your way”.

Passionate and potent, Stephen Tanner’s ‘Crazy Hearted Women’ is a shot of absinthe with a slap on the cheek…but in a good way.
