Track of the Day: Terminal Fear – Quicksand (2026)

Rubbing together the melodic force of Red Hot Chili Peppers with the confident frenzy of Rage Against The Machine, UK-based Terminal Fear smothers listeners in a rock meets rap flood of kaleidoscopic music. On one hand, the flowing sonic water is swift and clear; on the other, there is a sludgy grit that sticks to your skin and insists on attention. Celebrating life in its totality, Terminal Fear’s music tackles everything – the perfume and the sludge – and crafts moving, memorable music. The latest addition to their discography is the single, ‘Quicksand’.

Following the acoustic version of their 2023 single ‘Vacant’, Ryan “Twiggy” Twigs (drums), Aaron “Skip” Barlett (bass), Keiran “Rumm” Dunne (guitar), and Stuart Wright (vocals) train on the influence of RATM. For me, listening to this track was more of a palpable experience, rather than strutting about the room singing along to the single.

Finding a line between mosh-pit chaos and a gruff path through a sonic forest, Bartlett’s bass stomps with its steady beat, anchoring you in the moment. Dunne’s guitar soars overhead with a streak of light, classic rock fire in its crescendo. Twigs’ drums pound and crash, adding heaviness to the single. However, and this is my opinion, it is Wright’s abrupt vocals executed in a rap-rock stance that adds the forceful “pay attention” to ‘Quicksand’.

Reckless and dangerous, while still deliberate and steady, Terminal Fear infuse a sense of poignant depth to ‘Quicksand’. Melodically, you feel impelled to acknowledge, feel, and vibe the “in your face” tune; lyrically and thematically, it is as weighty. The band explain:

“The track tackles the manipulation of UK symbols to portray negative meanings, exploring how divisive narratives are painted by unseen forces rather than the people themselves – drawing the easily led into madness where truth becomes impossible to hear, no matter how loudly it’s shouted. Born from the place of passionate urgency… it’s like you need to give your all to get the message across, and this is where the passion for this track came from.”
