Track of the Day: The Margaret Hooligans – Red Rider

Influenced by the likes of The Who, James Brown, Soul Train, Miles Davis, The White Stripes and Fiona Apple, The Margaret Hooligans certainly have a diverse musical preference. Not only do they appreciate all types of music, it translates into a diverse and original sound. Bringing together rock, funk, soul, grunge, and a ton of other genres, the US-based duo are sharing a unique sound with the world. Featured on Rising Artists Music Blog, Sinusoidal Music, Find No Enemy, YMX, Yack Magazine and various other blogs, this talented pair are captivating hearts across the globe. One of the most recent additions to their discography is the single ‘Red Rider’.

Passionate, eclectic and difficult to define, The Margaret Hooligans bring innovation to the indie music scene. In ‘Red Rider’, the dynamic duo retells the classic story of Little Red Riding Hood, but not as a bedtime tale. Using the song as a sonic allegory of life in the past two years, The Margaret Hooligans describe a situation where she was warned, took no heed, was eaten by a wolf “where the acids eat away at her spark”, and then how she loses her way on a merry go round. Chaotic, terrifying and desperate, it seems like a pretty good representation of the emotions we live with during the pandemic.

What I find appealing about ‘Red Rider’ is how the chaotic theme is elegantly matched by an upbeat, frenzied grunge rock melody. Pounding drums combine with dynamic guitars and an interspersed electric ukulele creating the ideal backing for Meg’s powerful vocals. Rich and bold, Meg’s voice adds an odd sense of comfort with its warmth – strange considering the desperation of the theme. Although, it might not be so strange as Red Riding Hood is set free in the end.

Beautifully textured and layered, The Margaret Hooligans weave a kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry with ‘Red Rider’. I could say that Meg’s voice is the shining silver thread in the tapestry, but I’m not so sure – everything appears to fit together so well that it all stands out as something awesome. Taken off their upcoming album, ‘Red Rider’ is an insatiable song that you’ll have on repeat for days on end.
