Track of the Day: The Violet Stones – Power Hungry

Transporting you to the 90s Seattle grunge scene, The Violet Stones are an Australian band with an engaging, energetic and inspiring sound. A critically acclaimed group, The Violet Stones have found success with their previous singles ‘Kill Me’, ‘Shark’ and Guinea Pig’ receiving coverage from RGM, Hysteria Mag, Indie Band Guru and Happy Mag.

Emulating iconic grunge bands like Nirvana, Radiohead and Soundgarden, The Violet Stones are dynamic and aggressive with brusque, emotive lyrics. While showing similarities to these well-known groups, this Sydney-based band incorporate the powerful alternative-rock sounds of Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters making them far more unique. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Power Hungry’.

The final single before their highly anticipated album Pin, ‘Power Hungry’ is filled with heavy guitar riffs, pulsating drums and Sarah Curran’s throaty vocals. Transcending their forceful grunge meets alt-rock sound, ‘Power Hungry’ showcases The Violet Stones’ innovativeness and versatility as they experiment with heavy metal, rock and roll, roots and blues.

Touching on the controversial topic of gun laws in the United States, the consequential effects of the laxity and the objectification of women, ‘Power Hungry’ is an insightful and emotive narrative relevant to contemporary society. While their sound remains abrasive and brusque, there is a melodic and flowing (if that is possible with grunge) string throughout the track enhancing its poignancy.

“Recorded in Sarah’s home studio, ‘Power Hungry’ explores the idea of disregarding students’ safety in the sense of false security… Sarah also explores the intricate details of her life with heart-wrenching storytelling about her past and relatable denouncements of her judgement and objectification faced as a woman neck-deep in the music industry.” – The Violet Stones on ‘Power Hungry’
