Finding that line between art-pop intelligence and atmospheric modern sound, Vela Jones creates music that feels both organic and synthetic. While Jones might not have several pieces in her discography – her debut single, ‘STATIC AIR’ released a couple of months ago – there is an odd sense of familiarity within the otherworldly style; a sense of nostalgic comfort bound, entwined and lingering. Not only does she offer a distinctive sound, but she also connects with audiences, exploring and celebrating themes like survival, memory, love, loss, tragedy and triumph. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Star Light Star Bright’.
Sauntering through the pop realm of sound, ‘Star Light Star Bright’ is another Vela Jones song that is entirely pop. While ‘STATIC AIR’ fluttered more into the arena of alternative pop, ‘Star Light Star Bright’ has a solid, vintage pop air. Bold beats, shimmering synths, and an odd flush of percussion lingering beneath the keyboards sweep across the melody, and across your eardrums. It’s light-hearted, fun, and easy to listen to; yet, oddly, there is obscurity that makes your skin tingle and heart race.
One aspect I enjoy about Vela Jones is how perfectly her musical persona matches her visual appearance. An English rose, her bright eyes, sweet smile, and flowing blonde locks make for a picture-perfect face. The thing is, while the surface is lovely, Jones is more than a pretty picture. Known for her emotional depth and intricate storytelling, listening to her sing in a swooning sonic pool is fascinating.
So, my overall opinion of Vela Jones? Her debut single, ‘STATIC AIR’ placed her on our radar, and ‘Star Light Star Bright’ keeps her there.
