Waves Of The Echo – Words (2026)
Formed from the bonds of a long-term friendship, Finnish group Waves Of The Echo blends elements of indie, pop and rock in a swirl of refreshing but nostalgic waves of music. Over a decade ago, Rände Rännali (vocals), Tomi Meriläainen (guitar), Simo Kapiainen (guitar), Janne Nissilä (bass) and Lauri Lahtela (drums) began turning heads with their melodies and profound lyricism; then, an unexpected hiatus hit. Over the past few years, the idea of a return simmered quietly, not coming to fruition; then, in late summer 2025, Waves Of The Echo burst back with their latest single, ‘Words’ is 2026. Join us as we dive into this single.
Recorded and produced by Valtteri Väänänen, the track is a progression of the sound heard on their 2015 debut album, Fading Daylight, Bright Nights – a slip of 80s-inspired synth sounds breathing life into whispers of Depeche Mode. While ‘Words’ is an echoing wave of music with soaring guitars and crashing guitars entwined in the soundscape, there is a strange rock-tinged steadiness making every wistful vulnerability organised, structured and mature. A case of sweeping colours locked in an indie-rock tunnel.
Perfectly named, Waves Of The Echo is literally a wave of musical echoes caressing you in a shimmering synthy embrace. For me, the melody is soothing with a tranquil flow, but the lyricism adds weightiness and potentially poignancy to the single. The band explain:
“The lyrics are about the words we accidentally say to one another in the heat of the moment. All the beautiful words stay in our minds until they gradually fade into warm memories. The worst, most hurtful words, however, we remember with vivid detail for the rest of our lives. People age, words don’t.”
This is my introduction to Waves Of The Echo, and honestly, it’s like they never left. Instead of something riveting and new, the Finnish five-some merely picked up where they left off in 2015. It’s all great, but I am eager to know if there is something more up the lads’ sleeves.
