ZeeCogency – Oh (2022)

There are times when you just need music that draws you into its own atmosphere. Luckily, this is exactly what ‘Oh’ by ZeeCogency does through a combination of downtempo, electronica and cinematic tones. Layered over a hypnotic groove, the single has been crafted to draw you in slowly as it balances the sensibilities of underground electronic music with space and emotional resonance.

Merging different styles and genres, this single continues the artist’s sound that is much more than the usual formulas of electronic music. There is something thoughtful, edgy and memorable woven into each note that keeps you engaged whether you are a regular fan of electronic music or not. Focusing on the vibe of the music to create characters through sound, ZeeCogency turns melodies into introspective city soundscapes and cinematic wonder.

The electronic notes sparkle to life, contrasted by a deep beat that mimics the twinkle of lights late at night. There is a steady build to the melody as the layering of the track really comes into its own. You can feel the notes pulling you deeper into the cityscape painted by the tones. Between the electronic notes are single-word vocals that wrap themselves around the electronic tones, but at the same time call out from behind them. It is a sophisticated production that allows each element to come into its own while enhancing the whole.

Around halfway through the track, things seem to take a darker turn. The lights of the city are replaced with a tone that starts to get your heart racing a bit. The intensity of the emotions in the rapid movement of the beats is contrasted by vocals that are deeper and darker. It is like the shadows of the city reaching out from the dark corners, threatening to pull you in and causing you to tense slightly.

This gives way to the original tones as the song progresses before both come together toward the end of the track. It is a great flow that keeps you engaged, but also builds on the story that the music lays in your mind. Each aspect of the underground is brought to life through the music and comes together to showcase how it all lives as one. It is a very masterful electronic track that tells a story, but is also one that you can interpret in a way you choose.
