Abandon Ship! – Get Blazed (2020)

After reconnecting in Basingstoke in 2017, friends Luke Burywood (vocals and guitar) and Jordan Baggs (lead guitar) founded the UK-based group Abandon Ship!. While talented themselves, it was the addition of Clayton Deakin (bass) and Martin Sylvester (drums) that rounded off the indie-rock group. I’m not saying that Baggs and Burywood couldn’t make it on their own, I’m merely commenting on the robustness of the quartet.

Alright, now I’ve stopped digging a hole for myself, let’s talk about how the lads are taking the world by storm. Featured by BBC Introducing and Clash Magazine, as well as supporting acts like Milk Teeth and Larkins, Abandon Ship! has gained a reputation for powerful melodies with moving lyricism. The latest addition to their repertoire is ‘Get Blazed’.

Taking a step back from the upbeat indie-rock sound of their previous releases, ‘Get Blazed’ showcases the softer, calmer and more endearing sound of Abandon Ship! From the first chord, the lads ensnare your senses and carry you off on a river of music. The soothing instrumentation, including a rather impressive guitar solo from Baggs, delicately weaves with Burywood’s rich vocals.

Considering the intimacy, intensity and vulnerability of ‘Get Blazed’, one would immediately assume it to have romantic sentiments; however, this is not the case. While the lyricism combined with a heartwarming melody has the hint of lovers on the notes, the track focuses on the appreciation of peers. Using his bold English-inflexed vocals, Burywood perfectly executes an emotive and engaging four minutes of indie-rock music. Elegantly traversing the soul-stirring melody, Burywood delves into the grittiness of cherished friendships – y’know the under the surface stuff that people don’t often see but know exists in deep connections.
