Alan Starks – Sprung (2021)

There are some people who have you feeling tightly wound from the uncertainty of your standing with them. While they leave you feeling this way, you often feel the need to be around them regardless. This is something that Alan Starks understands all too well and has crafted into his single ‘Sprung’. Through his acoustic folk-pop tones, he draws you into the person’s orbit and fills with the emotions he has personally experienced.

Starks started writing music at age 12 as a way to connect with people and he still connects with every listener today. After learning to sing while singing along to old tapes of Les Misérables, he has incorporated influences from neo-classical to indie-folk and progressive metal into his sound. With an interest in making honest and interesting music, he effortlessly draws you into his sound.

‘Sprung’ has a moving acoustic guitar melody. From the first moment, the guitar picks you up and pulls you into the single. The stripped-back melody allows his vocals to shine even when the strings swell in the background. When the strings enter they add a richness to the track while making you want to waltz to the soundscape. This twirling feeling perfectly captures how you fall into the orbit of a person and are unable to leave. While the melody appears relatively minimalistic, there is an intricacy that highlights Starks’ musicality.

While the melody has a driving guitar and rich strings, it is Starks’ vocals that really steal the show. His vocals are powerful as he carefully crafts the emotions of the track. His performance highlights everything about the person that makes you like them and asks for them to stay in your life. The movement of his performance is velveteen and emotive as it dances through your senses. As you listen to him, you will think about someone who makes you feel all the emotions he is able to invoke and it is wonderful and beautiful.

Alan Starks fills you with affection for someone you never want to be away from in the waltzing and powerful flows of ‘Sprung’. There is a waltz woven into the movement of the melody that drives forward with the acoustic guitar. His vocals are masterful as they dance around your senses and tug at your emotions.
