Alexa Perez – Cliché (2022)

Inspired by the sounds of Taylor Swift, Lorde and Caroline Polachek, singer-songwriter Alexa Perez brings tender melodies to the masses. A relatively new artist on the scene, Perez made her debut in 2021 with critical acclaim. Featured on Tongue Tied Magazine, We Write About Music, Roadie Music, Sinusoidal Music and Indie Top 39, Perez’s music has been described as sincere, haunting and sensational. The latest addition to her well-received discography is ‘Cliché’.

Following her stellar track ‘Wondering’ (read our review here), Perez releases the insatiable sophomore single ‘Cliché’. Reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s intimate songs, ‘Cliché’ has both a bubble-gum pop sound and tender lyricism. The pop beats are combined elegantly with Perez’s warm vocals in an enchanting tune. Reaching out into the kaleidoscopic soundscape, we hear synth-laden crescendos into catchy verses and choruses. What I love is the interjection of an acoustic piano adding an organic and more individual vibe to the intense track.

With a strong flow of sound, ‘Cliché’ rides down a multi-coloured sonic slide breaking through the cinematic soundscape. Yet, while there is mild joviality in the pop delivery, the poignant lyricism pushes a more melancholic sentimentality to the track. Touching on issues of relationships, the ending of love stories, and the consequential feelings of sadness, guilt and loneliness. Perez’s rich tones ooze pain, desperation and that real punch in the gut when a relationship ends. ‘Cliché’ is a heartbreak anthem filled with a personal narrative connecting with listeners in an elegant way.

Relationships don’t always end because something was bad or broken. I had to walk away from someone that I loved because they couldn’t love me in the way that I needed. I felt guilty and wrestled with it for a long time.” – Alexa Perez on ‘Cliché’
