Alice Pisano – Crush (2021)

Hailing from Italy, but currently residing in the UK, Alice Pisano is a singer-songwriter with a siren-like voice that will easily win your heart (and hopefully won’t send you crashing into rocks). Following her critically acclaimed debut EP Celebrate Life in 2018, Pisano quickly gained a reputation for insightful and engaging lyrics over evocative melodies. Fast-forward three years and Pisano is still charming listeners with her silky voice, albeit in a more upbeat and energetic fashion. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Crush’.

The first single of 2021, ‘Crush’ shows a new side to this soulful songstress. Produced by John Foyle, the new track has an infectious buoyancy showcasing Pisano’s more playful side. Merging Taylor Swift-esque pop melodies with the more resounding Florence Welch-esque vocals, ‘Crush’ is a bit cheeky with a resounding soulfulness. Yet, while the track has a “pink bubblegum” cheerfulness to it, Pisano continues to show depth with the intimate lyrical content.

“It’s about having one of those strong crushes on someone that knocks you off your feet, but in an unhealthy way. You’re both in so deep that you live with the fear that the other person’s feelings might not be as strong as yours. You start overthinking, becoming jealous and possessive – it almost becomes like a battle.” – Alice Pisano on ‘Crush’

Bright and sparkling on the surface, but with a darker core, ‘Crush’ is all about love, romance, obsession and fear. The track might seem lighthearted with flowing harmonies and sassy sounds; however, it has a more macabre theme exploring conflicting emotions, irrational beliefs and inner conflict. Using her breathtaking voice, Pisano creates a juxtaposition between toe-tapping joy and irrational tragedy all wrapped up in an anthemic three-minute tune.
