Belonging – How Could You Know? (2020)

The idea that anything could happen is both exciting and terrifying. These feelings are woven into the foundation of ‘How Could You Know?’ by Belonging. While considering what could happen, the single also touches on the fact that when people have time to do what they want, they often end up doing nothing. Relatable and catchy, the single encapsulates so much of what we are all feeling or have recently felt.

Chris Patrick, the man behind the sound of Belonging, has branched out from his bedroom-pop beginnings. As a live act, he has supported Catholic Action, Everyone You Know and Sad Boys Club. Drawing on various influences, he creates a delicate and captivating sound.

‘How Could You Know?’ hits you with a great vibe from the first moment. The guitar line hooks your brain and draws you into the single. There is a delicate feeling to the guitar line as it lightly infiltrates your senses. There are a few layers to the melody that echo the harmonisation of the vocals. The guitar-driven melody has a very easy vibe with a hint of curiosity. There is a bit of wondering within the notes mixed with an almost nervous energy.

Patrick’s vocals bubble up from the guitar line to take you on a lyrical journey through the ups and downs of what could happen. There is an airy feel to his performance like it is a breeze sweeping lightly across the landscape. The questioning and nervous energy of the melody comes through on the vocals as well. There are some wonderful harmonies on the chorus that make this almost larger than life.

Belonging encapsulates the nervous, exciting, questioning and terrifying energy of the unknown in the flowing ‘How Could You Know?’. Cascading guitars draw you into the single while the vocals sweep over you. The harmonisations for the chorus combine with the layered melody for a textured sonic experience.
