Kinga Angelys – Hurricane (2022)

Happy, empowering, positive, optimistic – these are all words that can describe singer-songwriter Kinga Angelys and her powerful music. Known for her velvety vocals and addictive melodies, the Canadian songstress easily captivates listeners with her songs and carries them in the palm of her hand. While her debut single ‘Parachute’ was released in 2019, Angelys has been a musical entertainer since childhood honing her talent as the years passed. To date, she has been featured in various songwriting competitions including being a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition. If you don’t follow these events, then you’ll have seen her featured in The Sounds Won’t Stop, Ai Love Music, Sinusoidal Music, Rock Era Magazine and numerous playlists. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Hurricane’.

Following her festive single ‘Can’t Do Christmas Without You’, Angelys moves from a pop-inspired sound to a more pop-rock sound in ‘Hurricane’. Unlike previous work reminiscent of Katie Melua and Adele, ‘Hurricane’ is grittier, grungier and heavier single. Clearly seeing (or rather hearing) her love for Alanis Morissette and The Cranberries, Angelys has an obscurity in her rich vocals melded with an eclectic soundscape.

Flowing and melodic, ‘Hurricane’ opens with a soft guitar introduction before a crescendo into a catchy chorus. An incorporation of pounding drums enhances the toe-tapping, body-swaying rock influence. Think of those bands where the frontman (or woman) throws themselves forward while singing to show the power, force and intensity of the music. I can easily see Angelys being this frontwoman, owning the rock ambience and guiding listeners through a sonic whirlpool.

While there might be a sense of melancholic strife in the lyricism, ‘Hurricane’ is about moving through the proverbial hurricane and coming out on the other side a more empowered person. Angelys shares that this release is a “pop-rock anthem that reminds us of our personal power and potential to overcome obstacles and bounce back stronger than ever.” Sophisticated, sentimental and supportive, ‘Hurricane’ is a tribute to the vulnerable making their way back to the top and fearlessly creating change.
