Linuss – Passcode (2023)

With over a decade as a musician, singer-songwriter and guitarist Michael Glines has been sharing his natural talent with the masses. Originally the frontman of indie band Vues that gained popularity in the late 2010s with “shimmering synth tones, surfy guitars and soul lyrics”, Glines (and the other members) garnered a loyal following. After the dissolution of Vues in 2020, Glines chose to embrace a brand-new sound in his solo project Linuss. Featured on Obscure Sound, Ones To Watch, and Zone Nights, Linuss is finding his way to audiences on an international scale. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Passcode’.

Hot on the heels of his track ‘Pop Rocks’, ‘Passcode’ is the fourth release from Linuss in 2023. As with his ‘Unicorn’, ‘Passcode’ merges the delicacy of dream-pop with a tinge of surf-rock and RnB in the melody. Beautifully layered and mixed by Daniel Knowles, each element in ‘Passcode’ has prominence while coming together as a harmonic whole. From the soothing keyboard to the bright synths and Linuss’ soulful vocals, there is a kaleidoscopic swoon in the new track.

Just as the melody has a soul-stirring, multi-faceted presentation, the lyricism demonstrates the powerful soul-stirring sensation of its sonic poetry. Interestingly enough, while ‘Passcode’ was not intended to have a personal narrative wrapped in intense intimacy, it has a vulnerability that connects with audiences on a deeper level.

“I didn’t mean to tell a first-hand personal story but, in retrospect, it was mostly an accurate picture of my life at the time. Basically, feeling like I’d given everything I had to please someone I cared about deeply, but nothing I did was ever enough to make this person happy…hopefully, this track can act as a mirror through which anyone going through that can self-identity and course-correct…” – Linuss on ‘Passcode’
