Lizard – Back Again (2022)

There are times in life when someone is interested in you and you have no interest in them, but they just won’t leave you alone. This situation has been encapsulated by Lizard, with their aptly titled single ‘Back Again’. Through their funky rock sound, they look at the situation where someone you have tried to avoid or gently shut down comes back again and don’t seem to be backing down.

Delving into the thoughts of the moment, the band unleashes a touch of frustration over what is happening with a slice of questioning why it is. While the band’s sound leans firmly into rock territory, there is a jazzy funky vibe to this track. This influence comes from the thriving jazz scene of Liverpool and has slowly infiltrated Lizard’s sound.

‘Back Again’ hits you with a toe-tapping beat that leads you into a fun blast of horns. You can hear the influence of jazz in the melody, but there is still the touch of Lizard’s unique sound. Through the melody, you are led into a bouncing bop that you can’t help but move to. There is a cinematic funky feeling to the single like it would be the backing for an old black and white film. The horns are a lot of fun to listen to as they burst with energy while still bringing a tension to the sound. Between the lively and really groovy tones of the music is a touch of darkness that is a little sinister. Later in the track, the rock stylings of the band come into their own through a burst of guitars. The guitars soar before tumbling down into the jazzy groove of the drums. There is no way that you can listen to this melody and not move in some way.

The groovy vibes of the music are enhanced by the vocals that draw you into the story of the lyrics. Through the opening verse, the vocals bring a knot of emotion to your stomach that continues to tighten throughout the single as the tension of the melody and story hit home. There is a poetic flow to the lyrics as they delve into the feeling you get when someone comes back again and again, regardless of what you tell them. The frustration that you feel has been woven into a growing concern about the situation as that knot of tension grows tighter and tighter. On the chorus, the vocals soar on the blast of the horns as you try to find a moment of solace from the situation.

With the funky and groovy vibe, Lizard brings a knot of tension to your stomach while getting you endlessly moving to the vibes of ‘Back Again’. The melody has a creeping eeriness that is a lot of funk when combined with the funky blast of the horns. The vocals bring another edge to the single as they bring the emotions of the single to life.
