Michael Cohen – Prelude South: Living In Dadeland (2026)
Michael Cohen’s creative journey began early in life as he fell in love with the Beatles at age 7, indulged in Leonard Cohen’s poetry at 13, and continued to write poems well into his teens. His jump into the music side of things was actually a serendipitous accident when “someone left a beat-up nylon-string guitar in a group house I was living in. As soon as I could play three chords consecutively, I began writing songs…” Skip ahead a few years, and Cohen formed the band, The Invoices, which, sadly, dissolved a few years later. However, Cohen’s love for music continued to burn in the background and reared its head a couple of years ago as a solo project.
Following his 2025 single, ‘Save My Love Tonight’, Michael Cohen takes his first melodic step into 2026 with ‘Prelude South: Living In Dadeland’. The title track off his upcoming conceptual album, set for release later this year, the single serves as “pivotal introduction to a narrative-driven project, tracing a personal journey of relocation, profound connection, and the eventual unravelling of a “great love”…” In other words, it’s the opening moments of a story of life, learning and finding your way to your present, learning from your past.
Lyrically and thematically, ‘Prelude South: Living In Dadeland’ speaks from another perception as Cohen “found myself wondering what life might feel like there for someone starting over in a new place…” Melodically, it’s as emotional, new and refreshing within a profound place of existence.
Produced by Cohen, with mastering by Alan Douches, ‘Prelude South: Living In Dadeland’ is a sweep of acoustic rock music binding 90s alternative rock with 70s classic rock. Using an acoustic arrangement, the song opens with a rhythmic guitar that strums its way throughout. Bold drums beat in the background, while percussion twinkles about the room. A flitting piano peeps out of the back, while strings add heat to the soft, gentle tune.
Sincere, sentimental and an all-around fun single, ‘Prelude South: Living In Dadeland’ calms the soul, lifts the spirit, and leaves you humming along even though you have no idea what the words or melody actually are. If this is anything to go by, I am eager to hear the new album.
