The Subtheory – Things that caught my attention (2026)
Self-described as having “a sound akin to film noir for the beat generations”, each track by The Subtheory pounds with a pulsating drum beat hitting you in the chest, as trip-hop-influenced textures send shivers down your skin, and vocals whisper in your ear, wriggle about your brain and, sort of, just stick. A palpable experience of tension, relief, vulnerability, confidence, empowerment, tragedy, as the group creates music from ”…the depths of the soul where memories and emotions swell and crash down on each like waves, making outsider art for those that don’t quite fit in.”
Following the 2025 EP, Chtem revisited, The Subtheory’s new single, ‘Things that caught my attention’ feels like tumbling down the tunnel into Wonderland; bumpy, shocking, being shoved from one point to another, and when you feel like there’s ground beneath your feet, you continue to fall. Andy Hill’s drum machine keeps a beat pulsating with urgency, while Mike Bannard’s synths oddly smooth the ride while contributing with a hidden frenzy.
Melodically, ‘Things that caught my attention’ will really grab your attention, as well as your breath. A wonderful melodic alignment considering the concept of facing reality and its unreal crush of information, misinformation, doom and gloom constantly pushing. The thing is, as much as you feel a forceful thrust from the melody, Hill’s spoken-word vocals act like a bold statement against the suffocating setting. The Subtheory explain:
“Too much information, not enough understanding. We are determined to use our voice whilst we still have them. We are besieged by a mountain of influence and manipulation to condition us, to make our lives shaped and moulded to fit powerful people’s agendas. This is our pushback. Our stand.”
