Paul Alexander Low – Alien Race (2021)

Culture shock is something that most assume you only feel when moving to a new country. This was not the case for Paul Alexander Low when he was a first-year student in Birmingham. The clash of cultures that he felt has been turned into the engaging single ‘Alien Race’. The feeling of being in an alien civilisation is woven into the utter enjoyment he felt during his time in the city.

This clash is brought to life with the help of popular session musicians Rob Brian and Simon Johnson. The rather upbeat single mixes rock with Americana for a summer feel that highlights the powerful punch of Low’s vocals. As the second release from his upcoming album, it is a wonderful teaser for what he has in store.

‘Alien Race’ has your head bopping to its rhythm from the first moment. The guitars fill the low levels with a thrumming vibe that create a trampoline for the piano lines to bounce off. All of this is wrapped in a warm summer feeling that combines catchy rock sensibilities with the earthy feeling of Americana. There is also a touch of nostalgia in the melody that has your mind soaring on the wings of the melody. It is a really catchy melody that gets you hooked to the track before the vocals put the final nail in your addiction to the single.

Low’s vocals are so clear and carry an honesty that makes you instantly fall in love with them. The lyrics have a storytelling flow to them as he puts you into the tale of being far from home and feeling like you are on an alien planet. When the chorus hits, his voice soars into the stratosphere on the wings of the melody. While there is a feeling of being on the outside looking in the lightness of the single makes you feel that you can overcome this.

Paul Alexander Low captures the experience of culture shock and feeling that you are on the outside looking in through the infectious tones of ‘Alien Race’. There is a delightful summer vibe to the track that brings an upbeat vibe to a single that could be rather depressing. The approach he takes is amazing and the single is one you can easily have at the top of your favourite playlist.
