SALT – Tumbleweed (2022)

SALT are taking a look at the hedonistic days of the past, when people had too much fun, only for this to become routine. ‘Tumbleweed’ pokes fun at the things that are meant to be fun in life, but are hollow and pointless. Using the punch of punk-rock, they bring a fun vibe to a single that has a deeper meaning.

This punchy look back in time comes from Sharon Woods (vocals), Robin Woods (guitars), Simon Kettles (bass) and James King (drums). The family band started when Robin Woods found out his wife was a great songwriter for previous musical projects. After a practice room drum session with adopted son King, they roped in their uncle, Kettles, once they got their first gig.

‘Tumbleweed’ grabs your attention with an interesting opening tone that leads you into the warping guitars and pulse of funky rock. There is such a unique feeling to the melody as it gets you bopping around to its rhythm. At times, the music sweeps through you with a warble of guitars, only to push you into the punchy roll of the drums. The pulse on the verses adds texture to the sound, while bringing a strange bop of fun to the sound. It is a wonderfully crafted melody that moves through different feelings with ease, keeping you hooked to the single.

As the melody rather effortlessly draws you into the single, the vocals bring a post-punk easiness to the track. The lyrics have you thinking of those things in life that are meant to fulfil something deep inside, only to leave you feeling emptier than when you started. The rather sombre and bittersweet feeling of the vocals are a little at odds with the generally upbeat and fun melody. This creates a layered feeling to the emotions of the single as you fall into the comforting experiences that used to help you, only to be left adrift when they are empty and filled with tumbleweeds. Sharon Woods’ performance is wonderfully nuanced with reflective vibes meeting a poking of fun at the situation.

SALT pokes fun at things that used to be fulfilling, but are now empty and pointless in the textured and nuanced tones of ‘Tumbleweed’. The melody has a unique movement as it combines the instrumentation for a foot-tapping flow. The vocals have an easy edge to them as the reflective lyrics bring contrasting emotions.
