Stephanie Westdal – On The Video (2026)
Singing from the soul and writing from the heart, singer-songwriter Stephanie Westdal connects with audiences in her engaging melodies – “Adventurous. Child-like. Sexy”. The adventure doesn’t begin and end with music; it flows in Westdal’s veins and oozes from every note, chord, and piece of art she creates. Covering a lot of ground, the veteran musician ignited her musical flame in the 90s with the band, Chains on 20, and then wanderlust hit. Setting off to find deeper meaning, she spent years in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and finally back to her native country of Canada for more music. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘On The Video’.
With a reputation for multi-genre melodies, Westdal eagerly dabbles with jazz, pop, alternative rock, indie, and even some electronica in her songs. Produced by long-time collaborator Chris Burke-Gaffney and mastered by Allen Hunnie, ‘On The Video’ has an indie-pop backbone, yet leans strongly toward folk in the arrangement and intimate storytelling. Harmonic and brushed with rhythmic grooves, the overall vibe of ‘On The Video’ is a charming union of anchoring drums, pulsating bass, and winding guitar. However, on the other hand, within the multi-coloured wave of music, a sense of vulnerability, fragility and tenderness subtly shimmer.
As I mentioned, the melody is a united wave of sound, but the dancing vocals enhance that delicate unpicking of human emotion. With a twinkling warmth and richness, Westdal sings about the universal issue of trust. The flowing tone gives the idea of a comfortable place with loyalty and, well, trust, but is it altogether true? Looking at a personal experience of betrayal, ‘On The Video’ is about “…investing your heart and soul into a partnership, trusting them with your fragile feelings, only to find that they’re only in it for themselves. Hard to believe what they say, actions always speak louder than words.”
