Strange Divine – Buried Deep (2026)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Ross Harris, Strange Divine might be new to the music scene, but, for some reason, there is a familiarity to the music. Refreshing old but also inspiringly new, the UK-based musician creates music that “is meant to be felt and sat with, not neatly explained.” Given this philosophy of living with music and not a comprehensive explanation, one might wonder whether delving into Strange Divine in a music review is a good idea. Then again, music isn’t always what it seems, and we need to enter that realm where creativity is experienced to understand. Join us as we set off on this adventure with Strange Divine’s debut single, ‘Buried Deep’.
Offering something that is “closer to a descent than an introduction”, ‘Buried Deep brims with a melancholy brooding – quiet and sensitive, yet holding the power of a deafening scream. Simplistic in one way, with a pulsating drum steadily pounding along a guitar and bold keyboards. Then again, the minimalist production is intricate as every moment seems to crawl into the next, burying itself in the cinematic ambience but also standing out with a soothing twinkle.
‘Buried Deep’ is truly one of the tunes that needs to be felt instead of sitting back and listening to it while sitting in your armchair. Its sound is heavy, wriggling into your ears and pressing on your chest. Just as it has that heaviness, it also prickles your skin and caresses your face with gentle elegance and tenderness. It’s confident and forceful, yet delicate and sensitive.
Oscillating between the light and dark sides of a musical tunnel, Strange Divine has certainly created something that is divine in a strange manner. It’s neither wistful nor whimsical, but an ethereal otherworldliness exists. I’m unsure whether to hit the repeat button and turn up the volume or let the song sit with me as I linger in the three minutes of indie-rock.
Overall, what is my opinion of Strange Divine and ‘Buried Deep’? If this is what Strange Divine offers as a beginning, I’ll be sure to come back for the encore. Let’s hope he hasn’t peaked with his first single.
