Hallaballoo – You Will Break (2026)

Walking through various genres from funk, pop, psychedelic rock and R&B, US-based group Hallaballoo weave old-school and modern-day, bright and lively with moody broodiness, dancing and contemplation in their moving melodies. At its core, the nine-piece is “all about connection” inviting audiences to live and breathe experiences that are “equal parts song, story, and spontaneous magic.” The latest addition to the collective’s discography is the single ‘You Will Break’.

Known for their energetic, engaging and enchanting live shows, Hallaballoo win hearts with their confident stage presence. However, you don’t have to be at a gig to experience the force of their music, and we hear this in ‘You Will Break’. Recorded and produced by Gross and Jay Wesley, between Harmonic Hut in Minneapolis and Studio In The Country in Los Angeles, the single has polish and elegance, but a rawness exists that kicks at that feeling of a show. The arrangement shows maturity and experience, but there is also a sense of naivety.

Following the single ‘Johnny Too Bad’, ‘You Will Break’ shifts from a reggae-driven sound to something softer, slower, and strongly alternative rock. Proving themselves musical alchemists, the track is a melodic concoction of Primus’ anchoring drums, slips of Andre Rodriguez’s keys, and Gross’ beating bass. Yet, while each instrument contributes to the glistening sonic potion, it is Gross’ soaring guitar that drives the song’s shine. A crescendo into a classic rock solo (about midway through the track) drags you back to the 70s with a smile, and you can’t help but play your air guitar and pretend to be a rock star.

The instrumentation is intriguing, evocative and full-bodied, but it is Kylie Krick’s haunting vocals that enhance the single’s weightiness. She dances across like a fairy – light, twinkling and ethereal, like something present that you can’t hold. Perfect considering ‘You Will Break’ is about love lost. Gross explains: “The song was based on the vulnerability of falling in love, running away from it, and then realising it’s gone.”

Serene and tender with vulnerability and fragility woven into the music, ‘You Will Break’ is an intricate song that needs to be shared. Highly recommended!!
