Sugarmoon – The Only One (2020)

Since Sugarmoon formed in December 2019, they have hit the ground running and converted fans across Bristol with their unique folk-pop sound. The five-piece consists of Ryan McMurtry, Sophie Jones, Joe Shutz, Dave Martin and Ollie Grant. After forming a fanbase through live shows, their debut single ‘The Only One’ has now dropped.

The track is a sun-drenched soundtrack for those slow hot days of summer. The track is full of the creative energy that has made the band popular on the live Bristol scene. This ode to summer looks at warm memories and love that you never want to lose.

‘The Only One’ gets you into the summer vibes from the first notes of the organ. The winding organ notes have a 60’s Beach Boys feel to it. The meandering melody makes you think about sun-warmed sands and a gently lapping ocean.

It is not only the melody that brings the vintage vibes to this track. The vocals have a very Mama and Papas feel to them. The melody is carried perfectly in the vocal performance with the harmonising adding to the warm feel of the track. While the song has a very summery feel, there is something sad lurking beneath. It is almost like the feeling of knowing that the warm summer days can never last.

A defiant but bittersweet organ sets the vintage tone of ‘The Only One’ by Sugarmoon and sends you back to lazy summer days. The single uses a winding melody and delightful lyrics to paint a picture of sun-drenched sands with an undertone of sadness.
