Sunstroke Rain – Mad Men (2020)

There are a lot of things that we all encounter every day whether we realise it or not. Sunstroke Rain is touching on only one with her single ‘Mad Men’. This song takes a look at all those mad people who wield power and impact our lives in so many ways. A musical comment on contemporary society, she employs humour and sharp lyrics to get the message across.

This look at the powers-that-be comes from Karin Turesson with supporting vocals from Loulou LaMotte. The second track from her upcoming EP, it mixes on-the-nose lyrics with playful melodies. With the backing of Olivia Lyne and Lisa Frisk, Turesson creates a hyper-modern pop soundscape.

‘Mad Men’ pulses into your ears with a rather groovy and funky opening. The deep tones have a heft to them that mixes with the higher notes which offers a slight touch of jazz. The melody has an amazing dynamic movement that is completely genre-defying as it blends touches of different styles and genres. Each line in the melody brings something new, but they all combine perfectly for a full textured soundscape.

The textured soundscape is enhanced by the vocals which continue to push the boundaries. There is a pop sensibility at times that fuses with the groovy beats. This changes to a more folk world sound for a chanting line that states that there are too many madmen with power. The two vocal lines have a great interplay as they skip over each other for a wonderful listening experience. If you are looking for a song that is unlike any other, this is the one that you need.

Sunstroke Rain pushes genre boundaries with ‘Mad Men’, her comment on contemporary society. The melody is an amalgamation of different genres and styles. The two vocal lines enhance this musical fusion while skipping over each other for an engaging listening experience.
