The Celadors – Too Little Too Late (2021)

The definition of genre-defying artists is The Celadors. A UK-based group weaving their way through folk, alternative rock and indie-rock without being pigeon-holed. A popular young band during the 2010s, the band gained a reputation for engaging and energetic tracks; however, the group stepped away for a while following some traumatic happenings. Now the hiatus is over and the Manchester-based foursome is back with their infectious, innovative and endearing music. The latest addition to their enchanting discography is the single ‘Too Little Too Late’.

A young group, but a group who are willing to accept the challenges facing our changing world, The Celadors refuse to stick their heads in the sand and accept a tragic fate. ‘Too Little, Too Late’ touches on the issue of climate change and how important it is to “make some noise about it”. A soothing song fusing dynamic instrumentation with Norbury’s dulcet tones, The Celadors set the foundation for sociopolitical discussion over melodic mastery.

“There is a climate emergency and it’s up to us to make some noise about it. If we in the arts have a message to put to people, we mustn’t hide behind layers of metaphor. We need to act. We can’t be vain. There’s no music on a dead planet…” – The Celadors on ‘Too Little, Too Late’

I enjoy many things about ‘Too Little, Too Late’ but one of the most intriguing elements is the juxtaposition of a flowing melody with the heated subject matter (pun intended). The instrumentation and vocals have a hushed quality that seems to enhance the lyrical depth of ‘Too Little, Too Late’. Yet, while ‘Too Little, Too Late’ has a poignant narrative, there is a charm that pushes you into a swirl of sound with a moving ambience. Moreover, the addition of Emma Scotchmer’s violin adds a robustness to the track as The Celadors elegantly explore the fragility of humanity.

Unlike punk icons Sex Pistols or The Clash who screamed their message, The Celadors lean toward a Pink Floyd ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ sound to share their sociopolitical rhetoric. Anthemic and inspirational, ‘Too Little, Too Late’ filters through your ears, infiltrates your heart, sends chills down your spine and leaves you gasping for breath. It is, potentially, one of the group’s most triumphant releases.
