The Nine Wives – L.A. (2026)

The brainchild of veteran musician Woody Veneman, The Nine Wives is not merely a group of artists who got together to make some music; it marks the 20th anniversary of the Eindhoven-based musician’s career. Over the past two decades, Veneman has travelled across various genres with several bands, performing extensively – from dodgy strip clubs to major international festivals – and all the while building a loyal fanbase. With the duo Woody & Paul, he delved into acoustic folk, while dips into avant-garde graced his soundscapes with S.T. Cordell. However, it is his latest project, The Nine Wives, that draws our attention. Join us as we jump into their song, ‘L.A.’

Should The White Stripes and Beck have a child, the chances are The Nine Wives would be it. Taken from their self-titled debut album, ‘L.A.’ is, as Veneman describes, “…a breakup track: raw, direct… minimal, melodic and emotionally blunt.” Leaning strongly toward an indie-rock vibe, the track comes directly from yesteryear with an almost 1970s twinge in its soundscape. Produced by Pieter Kloos, ‘L.A.’ is soft, gentle and calm with a soothing veil draped across its arrangement. Entwined in a rhythmic groove, Veneman (vocals and guitar), Joni Houtman (bass and vocals), and Lola Heijdt (drums) breathe life into the harmonious melody. I find it intriguing that this song is a break-up track but has such a warm, rich sound.

A song you can listen to when hanging out with friends or just playing in the background, ‘L.A.’ is easy on the ears. Infectious and enchanting, you’ll find yourself singing along to the chorus even if it’s the first time you listen to The Nine Wives. As I mentioned, the juxtaposition between vulnerable melancholy and languid soothing is intriguing and is further enhanced by not just the lyricism but the clever vocals. The interplay between Veneman’s tenor and Houtman’s alto is like a dance, but also, almost deliberately, touches on the tender despondency of the romantic ending.

Sincere and sentimental, ‘L.A.’ is a song I can have on repeat… and I will! Highly recommended!
