Sean MacLeod – Light Up The Sun (2025)

Musicians always tend to find their own groove, a specific sound, something that makes people identify and follow them. For instance, the Backstreet Boys were another ’90s boy band. Nothing particularly different from acts like *N Sync or Blue, but there was something… a little something that kept people coming back to them. This is the case with Sean MacLeod. He’s no Nick Carter or Justin Timberlake, but there’s that spark that keeps him at the top of playlists. Diving into the complexities of life with a sound ranging from Britpop to folk to rock and roll, MacLeod is diverse but familiar and comforting. Come along as we listen to his single, ‘Light Up The Sun’.

Adopting a strong DIY approach to music, ‘Light Up The Sun’ is entirely created, from writing to post-production, by MacLeod. Brimming with a retro, nostalgic sound, the track is a sweep back to the 70s as vintage folk fuses with old-school rock. A tender combination of soothing acoustic guitars, a bold bass, clips of percussion, and anchoring drums, ‘Light Up The Sun’ is a swirl of tender warmth with a flutter of raw innocence entwined in the lyrics and vocals. It’s like sitting around the fire wrapped in a comfortable blanket, laughing along with old friends.

Melodically, the tune makes you feel at home, putting a smile on your face. Lyrically, it’s as captivating and expressive. In MacLeod’s exploration of life as it is, ‘Light Up The Sun’ is a conversation of the bad, the good, and finding yourself to reach hopeful ambitions. Lines like, “Circumstances, they will change /Turn to joy or turn to pain /Don’t forget that life is just a game /So play well” help dissect the trivialities and disappointments, but “Light up /Light up / Light up the dream you have inside /Never let it die” is an empowering burst of resilience and encouragement to come out of the swamp and fly toward the sun.

If you take a look at our reviews of Sean MacLeod, you’ll find that I’m a fan. I like to think, however, that this doesn’t cloud my judgement. ‘Light Up The Sun’ is a fun, light-hearted song that will make the day that much brighter, and I will willingly set it on repeat.
