Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps – Runaway Baby (2026)
Eager to delve into the joys, tragedies, and “well, I suppose that works” areas of life, singer-songwriter Tom Tikka uses intimate narratives and intriguing melodies to share relatable, innovative, authentic musical tales. A regular feature on The Other Side Reviews, Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps is an instantly recognisable name. Still, his diversity means you aren’t entirely 100% certain of what you’re about to hear. From Americana to alternative rock and indie-pop, his music is bold and weighty, so don’t think it’s flim-flam or forgettable musings. The latest addition to Tom Tikka & The Missing Hubcaps discography is the single ‘Runaway Baby’.
Following his well-received album Roomful of Strangers, which we discussed with him in a recent interview, ‘Runaway Baby’ brings together the musical talents of The Star Prairie Project and Tikka. Recorded with Janne Saksa, the new single is a few minutes of solid Americana music. Woven together with each instrument adding a colour to the sonic tapestry, ‘Runaway Baby’ draws together a bold blue bass, crashing red drums, and a bright blue guitar slithering across the track. Easy to listen to with a languid, warm, almost honey-soaked richness, the track could fit comfortably at any music venue with people singing along while nodding their heads and tapping the tables. Yet, as simple as it might be, an edgy accordion peeps from the background, adding obscurity and an amusing charm.
A calming tune on a stressful Thursday, ‘Runaway Baby’ is comfortable and soothing, and this is carried across in the lyrics…sort of. Delivered in Tom Tikka’s cosy, tender vocals, ‘Runaway Baby’ tells a tale of loneliness, concern and melancholy with lines like “I’ve been by my lonesome / Since you left without a word…” Yet, there is a sense of encouragement for that girl who left the lad driving away in his car to find herself and get “back on track”.
