Track of the Day: Adrian Sood – My Junky Friend (2026)

This might be my introduction to Adrian Sood, but the Irish musician has been turning heads for several years. His Spotify discography begins with the 2017 album, 40 Days, yet Sood’s musical offerings extend far beyond a streaming platform. A distinctive artist in the independent music scene, Sood’s music has featured on numerous TV commercials, shows and films across the globe. Moreover, his music transcends genres ranging from pop, rock and alternative to orchestral, avant-garde and indie. Join us as we dive headfirst into his dark-pop single, ‘My Junky Friend’.

Taken from his four-track EP, Black Roses, ‘My Junky Friend’ is a self-produced tumbling of acoustic piano with hushed percussion beating in the background. Soft, gentle and relaxing, listening to ‘My Junky Friend’ is soothing, particularly with the angelic vocals; a tranquil flow across a sparkling sonic river. Simplistic and peaceful, the track doesn’t have any abruptness or abrasiveness. Yet, while the song is polished, and it’s clear to see why many listeners are labelling it a fan favourite, there is an odd haunting and imperfect tint in the laid-back tone.

A reflective exposition of needs for connection, feeling inadequate, and just wanting to find solace in an off-kilter space, ‘My Junky Friend’ unpicks that space where escape and emotion collide. When speaking of the track, Sood explains:

“Late nights, blurry feelings, chemical love, and the fear of never being enough. ‘My Junky Friend’ is about the space between addiction and intimacy – when someone feels more like a temporary escape than a real connection. Written from the perspective of two people chasing highs while avoiding what they actually feel. If you’ve ever fallen in love at 4 am while the party was dying, this song is for you.”
