Pick Up Goliath – La Sombra (2026)
Eager to dive into the grittier, more complicated and tragically intricate areas of life, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sam George unapologetically unpicks raw human experiences with hard-hitting melodic metal. Performing as Pick Up Goliath, the Spain-based musician has been described as “A storyteller with the power of a demolition crew”, so if you’re looking for something soothing, then this possibly isn’t for you. Then again, the skin-tingling vulnerability and raw thrash of metal can be cathartic – a sense of soothing in challenging voids. Following the well-received singles ‘Hope Is A Hell Of A Drug’ and ‘Black Sugar’, Pick Up Goliath releases ‘La Sombra’.
The third track from Pick Up Goliath’s upcoming conceptual EP, Salt & Static, ‘La Sombra’ shifts from reflecting on depression and addiction to addressing the issue of grief. He explains:
“’La Sombra’ was probably the hardest song on the record to write. Grief is confusing because it doesn’t move in a straight line. Some days, the memory of someone feels comforting, and other days it feels like something haunting you. There’s guilt in moving forward, guilt in standing still, guilt in the things left unresolved.”
Conceptually, the narrative of ‘La Sombra’ is tinged with emotional honesty and resonating intimacy. Musically, it is as intricate, travelling across the five stages of grief without reducing them to a particular formula. From the outset, Pick Up Goliath hits you in the chest with a bold bass before thrashing drums crash behind. Just as quickly as dark slams, a softer, less intense rush of piano and steady drums comes up; then scorching guitars run forward, laced with the energy of death metal.
Volatile and aggressive, ‘La Sombra’ is the fist-pumping headbang, finding the explosive rage of grief. Yet, in the predominantly metal single, a flush of nu-metal rap slips along cinematic prog-rock. Confused, chaotic, and a bit all over the place, ‘La Sombra’ captures the wrath and pain of grief, but that delicate piano and George’s rich vocals sweep the more comforting elements of grief to calm the storm.
