Track of the Day: Coral Palms – Wildest Fears

With each player melding their personality into diverse sonic arrangements, Coral Palms is unique, obscure and quite enchanting. Lying somewhere in the indie-pop meets pop-rock genre, Ollie (drums and vocals) brings the high-energy performance, Will (guitar) adds a poetic slant with powerful riffs, Adriano (guitar) produces all this hard-hitting stuff, and Callum (bass) makes sure the lads remain down to earth with his calm, laidback manner.

Initially formed in 2017 when Ollie and Will began playing together, Coral Palms is almost five years old. However, it was only in 2019 after a sold-out show in Camden that Coral Palms was truly founded as a four-piece. Blasting onto the blogosphere and radio airwaves, the lads have received features on BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, Earmilk, It’s All Indie, Ear To The Ground and Our Sound Music (among others). The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Wildest Fears’.

Inspired by life in its entirety, the lads create music that reflects pure human emotion and experience in an intimate way. ‘Wildest Fears’ deals with themes of anxiety, frustration, fear, inner turmoil and self-discovery. The band explain that the song is “…about dealing with anxiety and self-image. At the worst of times, we find ourselves feeling lost in life’s lulls…but it is also about becoming a better person and looking outwardly on life rather than losing yourself in introspective thoughts…”

Following the track ‘Something In The Air’, ‘Wildest Fears’ inserts a reggae vibe into their typical indie-pop style. Easily a song to get a party started with its laidback feeling, the arrangement has both an edginess and soothing lilt in its melodic sound. The first song in a year, ‘Wildest Fears’ definitely indicates an evolution in Coral Palms’ sound, while still retaining the hardness of pounding drums and strong guitar riffs.

So, what do I think of ‘Wildest Fears’ and Coral Palms? Coral Palms have always intrigued me with their captivating music; however, this is taking it one step further. An anthemic, cutting-edge, genre-bending song has me tapping my toe and dancing about – and it will do that for you as well. I would love to see this played live and know it’s a massive hit for sold-out stadiums.
