Track of the Day: Natalia Quest – Inversion (2023)

Inimitable and undefinable, singer-songwriter Natalia Quest shares her deep and powerful sound with the masses. Drawing together elements of genres that collide in a musical storm of incredible beauty, Quest finds the balance in the eye of the storm, hypnotizing listeners with the sound of her voice and the bottomless depth of her soul. Hailing from Russia but currently based in the USA, her style has no label – merely the result of innovation and intricate elegance.

Inspired by the likes of Evanescence, SOAD, Rammstein, Lacuna Coil (and many more), one can rightly imagine the heaviness of her tone. Yet, a slip of Tori Amos, Muse and Radiohead tinge Quest with a lighter, kaleidoscopic sheen amidst the dark. Natalia Quest has been writing material for years but chose to share her music last year and all to critical acclaim. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Inversion’.

One of the final releases of 2023, ‘Inversion’ is a hard-hitting blend of melodic metal and progressive rock, woven together by a shimmering symphonic essence. The crashing drums complement the scorching guitars, offering a powerful rock/metal dynamic to ‘Inversion’; however, a haunting gothic undertone emerges with interspersed violin and underlying piano melodies. Reminiscent of bands like Evanescence and Lacuna Coil, the forcefulness of metal-inspired instrumentation hits you head-on. Yet, for me, it’s the soothing symphonic haze that truly captivates the heart. The complexity of ‘Inversion’ overwhelms listeners, while Quest’s bold yet gentle vocals guide them through the epic journey to the utmost truth within each of us.

For me, however, the concept behind the tune makes ‘Inversion’ even more formidable. If reality had a soundtrack, ‘Inversion’ would be the theme song. Natalia Quest explains:

“Inspired by the latest global events that we have all participated in and have been observing since 2020: pandemic, genocide, propaganda, mass manipulations, and lies… The song is about truth, about seeing clearly through evil and propaganda, about critical thinking, personal and collective freedom, personal and collective transformation of consciousness, and relationships with ourselves, nature, Earth, and other people.”
