Track of the Day: Nicki Wells – Carry On

Described by musician, producer and composer Nitin Sawhney as “an entirely new phenomenon…”, Nicki Wells offers the world a unique, obscure and beautiful form of sonic artistry. An artist, for that is what she is, Wells has performed in diverse settings ranging from the prestigious Royal Albert Hall to Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage and the Sydney Opera House. Not only is she a singer-songwriter, but her compositions have been used in theatre, films and modern dance performances. Already releasing music under the pseudonym TURYA, Wells has received critical acclaim from notable press and audiences. Now she has original work under her own name – come with us as we delve into the tunes.

Writing and producing original music during the “pandemic years”, Nicki Wells has used this time of uncertainty to breed a sophisticated sound. Written as a means of self-reassurance, the cathartic music is an intimate exposition of human vulnerability. She explains that her single ‘Carry On’ “holds a message of calm with its layers of soothing melodies…to inspire others to express themselves without restraint, to walk a path of fearlessness and to put their own wellbeing first…”

Influenced by her Italian and Swiss heritage, as well as her childhood growing up in India, Nicki Wells’ music is an eloquent mishmash of global sounds. Following her single ‘You’re Alright Kid’, ‘Carry On’ is a soft and soothing ballad with tender gentleness flowing through the track. Melodically, the smooth piano and Wells’ rich vocals effortlessly tip you into a swirl of sound where you are easily lost. Yet, the most intriguing element of ‘Carry On’ is not the charming arrangement but the underlying string section weaving a tinge of global music into the sonic tapestry.

Acoustic-inspired, ‘Carry On’ is a sparse single with a minimalistic approach; however, while there is simplicity in the track it retains a kaleidoscopic soundscape proving simple things can be more beautiful than hard-hitting rock tracks. While Freddie Mercury has us pumping our fists in the air with his music, Nicki Wells shows simplicity is just as pulsating.
