Track of the Day: Riot Sun – Panglossian

Lying somewhere between Dead Kennedys, Pennywise and Five Finger Death Punch with a bit of a Danish inflexion to the vocals, Riot Sun is a punk rock band pumped full of energy and attitude. Formed in 2018, the Copenhagen-based fivesome recently released their debut EP Bruises in December 2020; however, we’re looking at the single ‘Panglossian’.

The third single on Bruises, ‘Panglossian’ is a combination of hard-hitting guitars, pounding drums and robust vocals. While a punk rock song at its core with the “in your face” instrumentation, Riot Sun add a richer, slightly steadier sound with vocalist Jonatan Würtz’s rich tone. It’s difficult to hear if you aren’t used to punk music, but there is an undertone of raw honesty in the lyrics and desperation in the vocals. Emotional, but with the powerful slap to the face and reverberation along one’s spine, ‘Panglossian’ is a soul-stirring gem amidst a mire of darkness.

“’Panglossian’ is basically about dealing with the aftermath of a broken heart. Sonically it oozes of my love for Tony Hawk Pro Skater’s old soundtracks. We grew up in rural Denmark and owe a lot to games like Tony Hawk for introducing us to new music. We really hit the punk rock of those old games” – vocalist Jonatan Würtz (vocalist) on ‘Panglossian’
